I normally stay out of internet wars, but this one has progressed well beyond the point that I can remain silent. Sometimes you just have to stand up and be counted.

The details are well covered elsewhere:

By Rebecca Watson: Mom, Don’t Read This
By PZ Myers: Haters gotta hate
By Ophelia Benson: What misogynists call outspoken women
and many others

I hadn’t thought that supposedly rational people would even think such nasty things. But publishing those views, in such a sustained and apparently coordinated manner, suggests that “enlightenment” is not an aspiration for those people. That is the biggest condemnation I can think of.

These attackers display lack of empathy, a key dimension of enlightenment:

Summary: Attitudes and views towards other beings, human or otherwise. (Empathy)
Enlightened views: Peers. Equality. LGBT-acceptance. Pluralism. Meeting of minds. Sympathy. Great apes.
Unenlightened views: In-group only. Belief in sub-humans. Patriarchy. Intolerance. Slavery. Racism. LGBT-intolerance. Misogyny. Misandry.

In the unlikely event that Rebecca Watson ever reads this:

Illegitimum non carborundum

  1. Why would you want to support Rebecca Watson?

  2. I’m supporting Rebecca Watson in the “war” that has broken out. Some of things being said about her are unenlightened, and unacceptable as far as I am concerned.

I am not taking a position on the original events leading to the war. Any disagreements there should have been handled sensibly. Indeed, I expect some people did so. I don’t assume that everyone who disagrees with Rebecca Watson is taking an unenlightened stance. But some are doing so, as documented at the links I provided.

  3. This post is appreciated. Thank you. I hope we can head towards a new intellectual enlightenment and away from negativity, hatred and ignorance.
